Cultural

Bala Mandiram

There are fourteen hamlets around in the Hills. The Math (or Madam in Tamil) plans to bring them together under our Bala Mandiram (Siruvar Koyil) activity.

Bala Mandiram is a value orientation and personality development program for children conducted for boys and girls in the age group of 8-13 years (students of classes III to VIII).

The course is designed to instil in children the eternal values of our cultural and spiritual heritage, and to bring out their latent talent through activities like music, yoga, asana, drawing, painting, Vedic and Bhagavad Gita chanting, recitation of hymns and verses, storytelling.

The Bala Mandiram was designed to give practical expression to some of the eternal values and manly virtues presented by the great spiritual tradition of India as exemplified and taught by Swami Vivekananda. The directive principles of the Bala Mandir are:
  • Development of a harmonious character based on all-rounded growth—physical, mental, moral, and spiritual.
  • Recognition of the dignity of the individual and the spiritual unity and equality of all human beings.
  • Realisation of the fact that one’s true welfare and progress is inseparably linked to that of others, and that sharing and loving service must become an integral part of one’s life.
  • Stress on the truth that we are the makers of our own destiny, and
  • Individual and social well-being can be achieved only through steady and sustained effort.

Thiruvilakku Poosai (Deepa Puja)

In every house, light must shine. The light is said to be a sign of all auspiciousness. Vilakku or deepam signifies the purpose of beginning a glory of abundance.

So also, the inside darkness in our heart in the form of character blemishes must be removed and the lighting of the lamp externally provides an opportunity for everyone to grasp the idea of shining knowledge.

If a person does lights the lamp he/she would definitely understand the imagery involved in the truth that 'Knowledge removes ignorance'.

Youth Scholarship

Among the tribal population, youth constitute a significant portion. They get modern education and aspire to go outside their hamlets in search of better prospects of earning money. The biggest dampening factor in achieving their dreams is the paucity of funds to proceed with their aims.

The Ramakrishna Math Yelagiri Hills has plans to provide such youth a suitable amount of Scholarship to cross this difficulty.
